Scottish Power energy price rise of up to 8.9%

More than 2.5 million households across Britain are set to rise in the run up to Christmas after Scottish Power announced their intention to put up electricity prices by 8.9% and gas by 2%.

The rises will add £52 to the average annual dual fuel bill for households, resulting in the average annual bill coming to £1,357.

What’s more, Scottish Power is also making the ‘prompt payment discount’ less generous. The discount is offered to customers who pay rapidly after they receive the bill. This move looks set to affect those who pay by quarterly direct debit, cash and cheque.

The discount was worth up to £150 to customers who had paid their bill. Going forward this will be cut by over £85 to £65.

Scottish Power’s announcement comes in the wake of price hikes announced by British Gas (7%) and Southern Electric (8.9%), meaning that 3 of the “big six” energy companies have hit consumers with prices just ahead of winter – and just as consumers turn up the thermostats.

EDF has promised to freeze tariffs until the new year, leaving nPower and Eon as the only firms who have yet to make their intentions known.

Head of Energy at the customer body, Consumer Focus, Audrey Gallacher,  said: ‘Consumers will watch with dismay as another energy firm joins in the rush to hike prices.

‘This latest round of price rises will heap yet more fuel onto the fire of distrust that consumers feel towards energy suppliers.

‘Consumer Focus has no issue with energy companies making profits as long as it is clear that the market is competitive. However the watchdog has major concerns about the lack of transparency in the energy sector.

‘The market must start to operate with the highest levels of transparency and openness so that we can know whether or not consumers are paying over the odds to keep warm.’

Will Marples, Director at The Switching Helpline, described the recent price rises as “terrible news for consumers in the run up to Christmas”.

“It’s well known that almost 70% of households ration their energy usage due to cost and the recent announcements will serve only to drive this proportion upwards.”

“These price rises are not unexpected however, and if anything consumers should ensure they are on the best deal available. We recommend to our customers that they check their bills on an annual or twice-yearly basis using our free energy bill health check service.”
